Ardeer South Primary School
Volunteers Working with Children Policy
At Ardeer South Primary School we will maintain a safe educational setting for all staff and students by having all prospective volunteer helpers in the school officially checked. All volunteers are required to obtain a Working with Children Check before engaging in volunteer work at the school.
Working with Children Check - Definition
Working with Children Check is an application process introduced by the Victorian Government in 2005 to protect children from physical or sexual harm. The application ascertains the volunteer’s suitability for working with children by checking a person’s criminal history.
Ardeer South Primary School will have all volunteers screened through the Victorian Government’s Working with Children Check. Without this check visitors can not stay in a classrooms or participate in class related activities while students are present.
The Working with Children Check Application Guide and Form can be obtained at the Post Office.
The Working with Children Check attracts now fees to volunteers. The cost of $70 is applied to personnel who are paid to work with children.
The school may still conduct a police check when required through formal staffing arrangements.
Victoria Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration is still a required measure for all teaching staff both permanent and casual. They are exempt from this process.
Volunteers are to negotiate with schools staff as to what times and days their assistance is required.
Through consultation with the Principal school staff have the right to accept or not accept volunteer help.
